anyone done with cooking yet?   i am.  but aris is not.  i did the valenciana and the chicken macaroni.  aris is doing the ham and the turkey and the veggies and some filipino dish.  what a day yesterday, though!  we ran around like mad chickens - to sam’s for this and that, to harris teeter for more, to [...]

on snow and santa

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

people here in NC freak out when they hear the word snow.  you won’t believe the number of call-outs at work.  and for what?  two inches of nothing.  that melt by day’s end.
as far as i’m concerned, if you live in a state where it snows, you have to deal with it.  no matter how scarce [...]

caregiver

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

that is the title of sharon cuneta’s flicker on ofws who trade their professions for (supposedly) more lucrative opportunities abroad.
sharon portrays the role of a caregiver, who left her job as an English schoolteacher in the philippines to join her husband in london.  but she had to leave her son behind.
a caregiver, according to webster, [...]

three in the morning

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

as you know, my downtime.
when i can collect my thoughts, and hear myself think.  and when all this peace around me can allow me to reflect on a lot of things.  things that remind me that life goes on in my little corner, no matter what the rest of the world is turning into.
for instance,  yesterday, i wished [...]

christmas in our hearts

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

“oh, the weather outside is frightful….”
i know.  christmas is way away, with thanksgiving yet around the corner.   but 99.5 FM is now playing records all day!  yay!  nothing like christmas music to transcend time!
christmas songs always hit the chord.  they make me feel mushy.  and never fail to bring back memories of christmases past.  of loves that faded away and loves that [...]

a harsh reality

now here’s the thing with my husband. he chooses the homeless he gives money to. they’re a fascinating species altogether, the homeless. take this one we see at the entrance of one of the stores we frequent. he is there year after year after year, on the dot, once winter sets in. it’s unbelievable. he [...]

free chow

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

i would normally be pushed to line up for freebies. or i would ignore them completely. not today.
today, the flesh was weak. we had a late breakfast so at 3 pm, i was completely ravenous. and so when we got to costco, we ordered pizza right away, and while waiting to be called, proceeded to [...]

and the people have spoken

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

with a resounding voice!  56 million americans across the country!
obama won!  capping more than 50% of the popular vote, not done by a democrat since 1976!
surely a sweeping victory such as this magnitude says something?  God help me if i read anything about cheating or any more smears!
my husband and i hogged the tv and he truly didn’t mind [...]

ssshhh!

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

it’s nov. 4th, the national elections day.
i’ve already watched and heard and read enough rhetoric, name-calling, and smearing to give me a grand-mal seizure.
if i could vote,  i would vote for obama.  why?
because i believe that if he puts money back in my wallet, it will be dumped back in the economy and create jobs.  i [...]
